A few minutes later I was almost to the elevator that would take me down to the lower levels when a voice broke all concentration, stealth, and drove an icy monorail through my veins.

“Where are you going?” It was Zyryn SanDyer, Madame Zyn herself.

I turned slowly, fearfully to face her. She was standing at the intersection passageways and seeing her in person was unsettling. I wasn’t used to her new appearance with a short crop of red hair but her impact was still as heavy. While the memories of our time swirled like hot taffy in my brain I now recognized her for the person she really was - a psychotic killer. I was doomed. “Are you deaf, pirate?”

Pirate? Of course, the helmet was the perfect disguise. She didn’t know who I was. I immediately performed the Zyn salute. “Modon blee glogos nok,” I said in my best gibberish. Was it even close to Garpin, I had no idea.

She glared at me. “Speak Common, you turd.”

“A dozen apologies, Madame Zyn. You surprised me and I defaulted to my native tongue.”

“Do it again and I remove your native tongue.”

“Yes, yes of course, Madame Zyn. I was heading to the Dungeon. I am due to relieve one of the guards.”

“I have a different task for you. I need you to go to the Docking Bay and make sure that the smugglers we have on board don’t try and leave before I want them to.”

Oh for the love of cheese. Really? Did she have to pick me to ruin both plans I was involved with? “But…” I started and saw her hand instinctively draw closer to the blade on her hip. “But I will of course, Madame Zyn. As you command.”

She crossed her arms and looked at me expectantly. I saluted again and headed on my way. “Pirate.” I froze and turned again to face her.

“Yes, Madame Zyn.”

“You seem familiar to me. What is your name?”

“Braken Weez, my Captain.”

“I thought so.” This was continuing to turn into a quagmire. I was lucky enough to have glanced at the dead guard’s pass-card when I snagged his outfit but her familiarity could put me in a deadly collision course with her wrath. “Have you put on weight?”

“Uh, I don’t think so.”

She shrugged. “Aren’t you stationed at my cabin?”

“Yes, of course, Madame Zyn. But the Watch Commander reassigned me to the dungeon. No reason was given.”

She stared at me for another moment and I was sure she was seeing through my thin veil of deception. “Report back to me when they are secure.” I gave a quick nod and salute. She turned without another word and left. Watching her go I was reminded of the first time we met and taking in the view as she led us to Rink SanDyer. While that memory held a pleasant image it was immediately replaced with one of her burying a knife in her own mother’s chest.

As I started to head for the Dock I began to formulate a plan.
